When I first saw this book, what immediately captured me was the name. Veena is a name significant in my family, and it's rare to see such antiquated names in novels, so even though the word references the musical instrument, I was still pleasantly surprised and immediately intrigued.
I will say that I don't know if this is necessarily horror, but it's absolutely a thriller, no matter how short it is. It kept me hooked from page one and I was devastated when it ended. Aksheeya, the author, has a magnificent way with words and the descriptions, particularly that of the veena, were incredible! In some instances, they were a bit too much, and it forced me to re-read the paragraphs several times, but once I understood what I was reading, I really enjoyed it!
The connection with the jackfruit, the veena, and Dhwani were amazing. I was excited to learn more of my ancestral home through this book, and seeing Dhwani and Rudhra's relationship manifest and progress was shattering and tugged my heart.
The narrator in this story is unnamed, and it's unclear what happens to them at the end. I kind of wish the reveal of Dhwani and Rudhra's story wasn't done as an exposition, rather something the narrator discovers through their inquiries, but nonetheless, I enjoyed it immensely! The twist was unpredictable!
This is a book I would love to have in my hands one day, and I look forward to see what the author publishes next!
