Summary of the Novel:
Sir Dennis Fairplace, knighted war hero of Crimea, has had enough of England and family. Overwhelmed by Christmas Day celebrations, he flees his family’s home to board a train northward, but a run-in with brawlers interrupts his plans.
Blanche Badnarrow, cloistered ward of her uncle, the cruel Bishop Badnarrow, secretly plans to elope with her lover to Scotland. But at the last minute, he abandons her at the station. That leaves the bishop determined to make someone—anyone—wed his “ruined” niece.
Enter Dennis, who stumbles into the bishop’s private rail car while trying to avoid a brawl, and finds himself a captive bridegroom.
Blanche and Dennis must escape their prison before her uncle grows tired of their reluctance to wed and throws Dennis from the moving train. As they plot their getaway, the couple begin to wonder—would marriage to one another be so bad after all?

My Christmas Knight by Anne Knight is a delightful quick read that brings fuzzy feelings to one's stomach. It's by no means a simple, cozy novel, as there are heartbreaking moments and times of despair, but I enjoyed reading her characters and her simple tone makes the story easy to follow!
Blanch Badnarrow and Sir Dennis Fairplace both have their demons that they're fighting. Blanche's extremist bishop Uncle is the perfect man to hate, shaming Blanche for allowing herself to lose her "virtue" to a man she met at a ball. Having been abandoned by her lover, her uncle is adamant about marrying her off to the first man he sees so that the burden of her action won't shame his name.
Meanwhile, Dennis is a war hero who wants nothing to do with his title. He struggles with the events of the Clemia war that he fought in, but he's drawn to Blanche's kindness and determination, just as Blanch falls for his respectful behavior and genuine kindness toward her.
The story is short but sweet, tying up neatly at the end. Blanche and Dennis' Christmas miracle was well worth the read, and I loved it when Blanche's uncle got what he deserved. I wished we had a scene where Tobias, Blanche's ex, realized what he'd lost, but that epilogue was amazing on its own! If you're looking for a quick, amazing read, this novella is for you!
Thank you to Anne Knight and Bookfunnel for this ARC copy! 💜
